The Paldiski Design Studio has worked to empower the children and youth of Paldiski through the exploration of creative art since 1995. Olga Shehereva, an artist and art teacher, founded the NGO in this former secret Soviet Army town. There is a limited choice of free-time activities in the town, so the project is seen as a way to bring the children and young people from the streets to the atmosphere of love, security and creativity thus to prevent social explosion in the town.
In the early days of Design Studio, resources were so scarce that a class would have to sit around one big piece of paper and create a single picture together. But what began as dire necessity has been developed into a pedagogical concept, which teaches the children more than just painting: in this collective process of creation they learn social skills, the importance of team work and how as individuals to relate to society as a whole. The Studio has now expanded to teach the children aged 2 to 16 drawing, painting, composition, plastic, computer graphic and the history of art as tools for self-expression.
In 1999-2000, Design Studio conducted a criminal prevention project titled "Rainbow to the Future" that was funded by the Estonia Open Foundation. During 8 years of its existence Studio has hosted 16 art exhibitions in Estonia, Germany, Sweden and Switzerland. Last 3 years Studio had 3-year project called "From 2 to 5". This project implements a program of personal development of children ages two to five, through the exploration of art. The program works not only with the children, but also puts an equal emphasis on their parents (mostly marginalized, young and single mothers), who actively participate in all the activities thus integrate themselves into this supportive community of mothers living in the similar situation. The main financial sources of Paldiski Design Studio are: subsidies from municipality, participation fees and grants for projects.
Since 2000, we hosted several foreign volunteers from Germany, Austria and France.
Usually we have 5 constant staff and 1 volunteer during a study year: bookkeeper, cleaner, 2 teachrs, Chairman of board/ Coordinator and 1 volunteer. More information is available at: http://www.paldiski.ee
